![]() ![]() Well, not all with the same colour scheme, actually. “What? Sprite enemies aren’t murky and indistinct?” No, Prodeus, and… “Oh no! I’m so sorry!” No, ah… I wasn’t implying that was a bad thing, Prodeus, I was just saying “We’d better do as best we can to make them as murky and indistinct as possible anyway and all with the same colour scheme! Phew, now we’re real game designers.” And there are other reasons for it – to simultaneously evoke and enhance the classic boomer shooter retro look, and as I said in my Doom retrospective review, those crunchy pixeled sprite enemies make for a greater expedience because it’s a lot easier to distinguish them from the background environment, in contrast to the murky waiting for indistinct bits of distant chest high wall to return fire as seen in the Gears of Wars of the world. Obviously it would’ve been easier just to print out a Google image search result and glue it to your spectacles but that’s not the point – the sheer amount of unnecessary effort is what makes it impressive. ![]() On the one hand, it’s good old fashioned showing off, like recreating the Last Supper by delicately arranging different coloured Cheerios on a parking space. This look has been chosen for deliberate stylistic reasons. Obviously this is fucking used teabags in the eye sockets mental because at that point it would be approximately ten septillion times easier just to use 3D models. You know how the 2D sprites in Doom always looked like they were turning to face you because there wasn’t a different sprite for every angle you could view them from? Well, in Prodeus, there IS a different sprite for every angle, as well as every vertical angle, for every single animation frame of every single entity. How much work, Yahtzee? Well, besides the modern lighting and texturing and inevitable exaggerated dripping-off-the-ceiling gore effects, Prodeus is doing its damnedest to make 2D spritework look like 3D graphics. In fact I wonder if it was originally going to be some kind of HD Doom mod, the sort of thing those eye-twitchy toothbrush chewers in the Doom modding community consistently put worrying amounts of effort into to stave off having to play another fucking game one of these days, but after the creators had some kind of sanity fart they realised it would be a lot nicer to actually be paid for all that fucking work, and here we are. Which brings me to today’s subject, Prodeus, not to be confused with Proteus, which was a walking sim from 2013. Maybe we could broadcast a popular children’s cartoon in which every episode’s plot is resolved by a character setting themselves on fire, then wait twenty years and buy a controlling interest in every major burn ointment manufacturer… or perhaps alternatively just hack out another fucking Doom clone. The ongoing glut of indie retro boomer shooters has proved the absolute mother fuck out of the 20 year nostalgia wave theory, so now I’m just trying to think of a way to exploit it. Third-party software has been indispensable for building Grand Theft Auto mods, due to the lack of official editing tools from the developer, Rockstar Games. Frequently created by anonymous modders, modifications are presented in the form of downloadable files or archives. These unofficial modifications are made by altering gameplay logic and asset files within a user's game installation, and can drastically change the gameplay experience. The new ranged weapons are a significant improvement to your arsenal. You can play with a bunch of fun new weapons and battle new enemies. Here you'll be visiting battlefields that recall World War II, the Old West, and robot factories. Gone are the mostly fantasy areas of DeathSpank. While this sequel does feel very much like the original and sends you on the same sorts of quests, you will be traveling to quite different locales. The co-op characters are basically meant as a support class in RPG standards, and theyre really only good for healing themselves and killing the occasional miscellaneous foe.Play Thongs of Virtue picks up a while after DeathSpank left off, with the hero having defeated who he thought was his arch nemesis - only to learn there are others in the circle of evil that need be brought to justice. It feels tacked-on, as it doesnt include any online co-op (which would have been a very welcomed addition), and the second player is extremely limited in what he can do. There is even a local cooperative aspect that might keep you and a friend entertained for a short while. The game itself is quite lengthy and can span upwards of 15-20 hours to complete, depending on if youre one to finish many side-quests. It comes in handy since the bulk of the game involves an assortment of comical fetch-quests to keep you occupied during the riddles of the main plot. These shanty poop-shacks are widespread throughout the DeathSpank microcosm and even offer you teleportation as a means of transport. The checkpoint system is very forgiving, as death is boiled down to respawning at the nearest outhouse. If youre looking for a difficult game, then you may want to look elsewhere. Overall, there are certainly more visually appealing downloadable titles on the market, but thats not to say DeathSpank: Thongs of Virtue isnt without its charm. Colors gradually transition from day to night, depending on the area youre in, and youre treated to subtle environmental cues like raindrops or snowfall to acclimate the setting. The transitions when moving from one area to the next are nicely done as well. Parts of the landscape rise and fall beneath the horizon line of the foreground, and it almost feels like youre walking around a giant globe. The game world also appears to have a slight curvature thats easily distinguishable when wandering from place to place. It gets away with using more two-dimensional textures than most games do these days because of its limited camera angles, and yet somehow it works well for itself. The overall presentation of the game is unique. The inventory even comes equipped with an item grinder that converts your possessions into their base monetary value, but its really only used to make room for better quality items you still wish to hold on to. Unfortunately, since the majority of weapons, armors, potions and health items can be scavenged off a downed enemy, it basically negates the use of money in the game. ![]() You would think that with this amount of plunderage the shops would play a more important role. ![]() |
